Do They Do This Full-Time?

You want a professional to guarantee the quality of your photos.

There are a lot of people who are hobbyist photographers, who have done courses and know how to take pretty pictures, but it may not be their main line of work.

A great way to weed out professionals from amateurs is to give them a call.  If they pick up the phone, you’re golden.  If not, alarm bells should be going off!  Professional photographers are glued to their phones, because that’s how they get news about potential jobs.  Someone who’s serious about what they do will either take your call immediately, or call you back with lightning speed.

Use Google to Your Advantage

Any professional will have a strong online presence, because it is their full-time business.

Searching “best wedding photographer” or “best proposal photographer” in your area actually goes a long way.  It’s going to give you really good gage on who the best and most popular.  Keep an eye out for good reviews on Yelp, Facebook, etc.

Local Knowledge

Your photographer should be giving you advice based on local insight.

The Brooklyn Bridge is tourist central. Consulting with a proposal photographer means that you’re more likely to avoid the crowds and get that incredible reaction photo. From Stephen’s surprise proposal.

Meaning: if where you want to propose is close to a school, and you want to do it at 3:00, they should be able to let you know that it will be crowded.  You want a photographer that knows your while your proposal location might be really busy at 3:00, it’s going to be nice and empty an hour earlier. They should have all of the little details that will help you to eliminate any problems.

With our photographers, we recommend meeting the client at the same location, day of the week and time as the scheduled proposal to see what the area looks like.  Not only does this make for better pictures, these extra efforts show that this person is thinking about your proposal, and is not just trying to turn out cookie-cutter work.

Do They Do Their Research?

They should know what’s going on in the city the day that you want to propose.

For example, I’m currently thinking about this Sunday, when there’s going to be about 200,000 people slugging around Central Park after running 26.2 miles.  How would that impact a Central Park marriage proposal?

These are things that you shouldn’t ever have to stress about.  You’re paying top dollar for a photographer.  Make sure its worth the investment by going with someone who is prepared to work out all the logistics.

Flexibility

It’s your engagement, and you want your proposal photographer to work with you, not just tell you what to do! 

Your photographer should be able to give you helpful suggestions, like tips about lighting and the best way to stand. But if you want to do it in a set spot, they’ve got to be able to work around that and they’ve got to be professional enough to make it work no matter what the circumstances.

Body of Work

They may be a great all-around photographer, but are they a specialist in what you’re looking for?

What we’re seeing more and more of is photographers becoming jacks-of-all-trades, but really not becoming professors of one. For example, you wouldn’t hire a product photographer to shoot your wedding, you’d hire a wedding photographer. So when seeking someone to capture your proposal, you should be looking for someone who specializes in proposal photography.

You want a high volume of proposals in their portfolio, with a variety of different locations, poses and photo compositions!

Discreet Style

Do you really want some random guy or girl standing three feet away from you furiously firing off the shutter while you’re trying to drop down to one knee?

The concept of surprise proposal photography is capturing the proposal and the reaction without intruding in on that moment.  Your client’s partner should have absolutely no idea that the photographer is there taking pictures. 

And of course, that reaction has to be reflected in the work. Making sure the moment is uninterrupted is going to create that reaction shot that your partner will want to remember forever.

Enthusiasm

 Your photographer may have photographed hundreds of proposals, but are they interested in yours? 

This to me is almost as important as body of work and skill!While they may have done this before,  it’s your first and only time and you want them to convey confidence and enthusiasm.

They have to be excited about exploring your ideas on where to pop the question and why you want that location, so that they can help you get the best outcome!

Number of Photos

What we’ve noticed is people offering proposal photography, but only giving clients about 25 pictures.

If you’ve never met your photographer before, how are they to choose your 25 images?  You should be getting a professionally edited gallery that is reflective of the whole event, which means at least 125 edited photos. We’re not talking crazy, Vogue-cover photoshop, but we are talking basic color correction and making them all look pretty.  You should have some in black and white, some in color for a good variety.

High Quality Images

This means high resolution photos.

You need your photos to be high resolution for good prints.  A lot of photographers may send you photos that aren’t high-res, and then offer high-res photos for an extra cost.  That is daylight robbery, and if they even suggest that, you should walk on to the next photographer.

Quick Turnaround

You don’t want your photographer to spend 15 hours photoshopping  25 images, because that means you’re only getting a small gallery that takes 3-4 weeks to create.

You want to announce your engagement!  You don’t want to sacrifice quality, but you want to make sure you’re getting them 4-5 days after to share with family and friends.  Make sure the turnaround time is in the contract, and that you agree on it.

Back up plans

The best surprise proposal photographer will be able to control just about everything, except the weather.

But they should have a plan for a rainy day. If the weather is looking dodgy on the day, don’t be afraid to ask the photographer to move it around. They want to capture the best possible pictures, so they should be flexible.

If you’re set on the date, your photographer should have enough local knowledge to provide you with back up plans so that you won’t be standing like a drowned rat on the sidewalk getting sprayed by the X39 bus that’s whizzing past.

You Get What You Pay For

For the same reason you don’t go for a cheap wedding photographer, you shouldn’t scrimp and save when it comes to your proposal. 

This is your foot in the door for a mother-in-law on your side, so go with the best quality over the cheapest price!

Pay half price and you’re going to get half the quality.  That’s a general rule of thumb, and though there are some exceptions, going with the cheapest option is often a risk!

How They Met:

These college sweethearts met when they lived in the same dorm building back in 2010.  Cullen was a Junior and Melissa, a sophomore.

Cullen opted for our Proposal Photography Package 

Cullen noticed her from a distance, and thought she was cute.  So he stopped by her dorm room on his way home from class one day and they started chatting.  He spoke about his family and relayed a story about how he took his little sisters to a movie that week, and she was instantly intrigued by his commitment to his family.

Cullen could tell that Melissa was selective with who she chose to trust, and he enjoyed that about her.  He knew it would be a challenge to impress her, but he was up for it, and he set out to get to know her better!

How They Knew:

Melissa says she knew after their first unofficial date that Cullen was The One.

 After they walked to church together on a Sunday morning, Cullen asked her to join him afterwards to help him pick out a birthday gift for his older sister and go for coffee.

For Cullen, it took until about a year into their relationship, when they went to Baltimore on their first getaway as a couple.  He was so content and at peace when they were taking a walk together around Federal Hill Park, that he knew he never wanted to be with anyone else.

The Surprise Proposal:

Cullen carefully planned his surprise proposal under the guise of a romantic weekend getaway, taking precautions to make sure it was a complete surprise.

He organized another trip to Baltimore, this time with an extra special question to ask! When they reached a scenic point that overlooked all of Maryland, Cullen dropped to one knee and presented her with a gorgeous ring Charisma Jewelers in Rochester, New York.  Judging by her priceless reaction, discreetly captured with our unique brand of proposal photography, it was a total success!

After she said yes, the couple wandered to the nearby American Visionary Art Museum for a unique and stunning post-proposal engagement session!

How Did You Guys Meet?

Maeve and I first met just after finishing our third year at the University of Georgia. Almost everyone had already left town for summer, but a mutual friend convinced each of us to stay and go out one night so we could be introduced. We met out on the town and spent the rest of the night talking over drinks and pizza. Soon after, we parted ways to return home for the summer, and as Maeve likes to point out, I never called her. However, things quickly picked back up when we returned in the fall, and we formally went on our first date.

How They Met:

David and Jill met at work in their hometown of Buffalo.

“I wish I could tell you we met in some exotic place under the stars, or someplace sexy like the Caribbean, but that’s just not the case here,” David said, comically.  But it was the effort that David put in just to meet Jill that makes their love story romantic, no matter the setting.
The two crossed paths at work, and David noticed her immediately. He thought she was “drop-dead gorgeous,” and wanted to get to know her. He thought about how he could see her again, and reached out to one of his coworkers who worked directly with Jill to get him into some of the meetings they attended together.

Falling in Love:

Every time their paths “crossed,” David struck up conversation and turned on the charm.

Jill was impressed that he was able to make her laugh. She ultimately agreed to go on a date with him, despite their mutual concern about dating someone they worked with.
“Neither one of us could say no!” He said. “Something just drew us to each other.”
On their first date, conversation was easy. They spoke all night, with Jill revealing at one point that she thought she was never going to get married. David immediately thought he was going to change her mind. During that meal, he already had decided that one day, he would ask Jill to marry him.
He simply knew that he couldn’t live with out her.
They went out on two more dates that week, and by Friday, Jill had reversed her opinion on marriage. She knew David was The One, even after just one week of dating.
As they got to know each other, their initial feelings were confirmed. Being together was easy. They both work high-pressure jobs, but when they were together, all of the stress seemed to melt away. Thinking back on their respective paths, David and Jill decided that it was nothing short of fate that brought them together. They felt lucky to have met each other.

The Proposal:

David said Jill knows him better than anyone, so she had an idea that he was going to propose on their weekend getaway to NYC.

He wanted to make sure that the proposal itself was a surprise tailored to Jill’s interests.

He paused in the serene silence of a waterfront Gazebo, knelt down on one knee, and presented Saharnaz with a sparkling custom ring from Adiamor Jewelers.

As he placed the ring on her hand, Saharnaz could barely contain her joy– and Paparazzi Proposals was there to capture their perfect moment.

But all happy endings have beginnings too!  For Sultan and Saharnaz, their fairytale started in their college cafeteria in January of 2008.  A mutual friend insisted that the two would be perfect for each other and invited them both to lunch.

“After meeting, we ended up being in the same Western Civilization class,” said Saharnaz. “And it turns out after all, that Layla–my childhood friend–was absolutely right!”

For Sultan, it was love at first sight.  Saharnaz’s bright smile and bubbly personality won him over.  He began casually courting her, walking her to class and doing everything he could to make her smile, dancing in the hallways and cracking jokes.

It worked–Saharnaz said that Sultan’s ability to make her laugh hysterically that had her falling for him.

Sultan knew Saharnaz was The One from the first day they talked.

“It really isn’t easy to describe it in words, but it’s a feeling of when you know, you know!” He said.

His initial instincts were confirmed as Saharnaz stood by him, through good times and bad.  Saharnaz said their romance was rocky in the beginning, but after reconnecting in June 2009, she knew the moment she saw him that she never wanted to be apart from him again.

As their love grew, Sultan began planning an amazing proposal.  Both Saharnaz and Sultan loved Old Town Alexandria, and the couple had shared many romantic dates there, so Sultan decided it would be the perfect location to pop the question.  He enlisted Saharnaz’s friends to plan a “girls night out” so he could go and ask her parents for her hand in marriage, and contacted Paparazzi Proposals to capture the magic.

Arriving earlier in the day, Tim was able to find a quiet secluded spot that offered some privacy and the perfect romantic setting. Before we get to the big moment, let us tell you how it all began!

They were set up on a blind date by Tim’s friend close to one year ago. Tim was immediately drawn to her soft smile and how kindhearted she was. “She also laughs a lot at my bad jokes which makes me feel good about myself!” Meanwhile, Sunna was taken aback by the care in which Tim catered to her every need. She shared that he was always trying to find a way to make her happy. It’s pretty clear both of these guys hit the jackpot!

Both having a strong faith and relationship with God only brought them closer together. They quickly considered themselves a team and able to help one another through any challenges life threw their way. Busy planning and preparing for an upcoming trip to Korea, Tim knew this would be the perfect time to surprise her with his proposal. Let’s have Tim tell you how it all went down…

“We decided to start writing journal entries to document our lives together. So when I was thinking about ways to propose, I decided that I would write my first journal entry in the moleskin that I bought for her. After she finished reading the letter, I told her to turn to the next page. In the following pages I wrote, “Will You Marry Me”. She turned around and I was on my knee.”

When he and Erin had first moved into together, a huge step in their blossoming relationship, it was the first place in Chicago they fell in love with. They loved the view of the skyline it provided, and quickly became a symbol of this milestone in their relationship. However, it would soon be a part of an even bigger milestone!

Before we get to Corey’s heartwarming proposal, let’s learn more about how their beautiful relationship came to be. They first met close to 8 years ago while both attending the University of Iowa. It wasn’t long before these “hawkeyes” would have eyes for one another!

While hanging out at The Summit, a favorite local bar, they had a most unusual introduction. As Corey approached the dance floor, he was suddenly grabbed by the arm by a rather short girl. Before he knew it, he was being introduced as her boyfriend, clearly in an effort to save her from dancing with some guy she was not interested in. Intrigued and amused, he played along, and the two wound up dancing for hours.

Corey was immediately attracted by, as he puts it, “the sheer amount of personality that was beaming out of such a short individual!” He describes her as “infectious.” Oh, and being easy on the eyes didn’t hurt either! Erin was instantly taken by Corey’s good looks and charming personality. Within just the first few months of dating, he knew that she was “the one.” Almost 8 years later, he is still equally infatuated with her. Although he took a little longer to first ask her out than Erin had hoped, his cautious, measured approach to things is part of what made her fall in love for him.

So as rain dropped down from the clouds above, Corey dropped down to one knee. As he told her how much he loved her, he pulled out a gorgeous engagement ring, and asked Erin if she would marry him. One look at the amazing pictures from this magical afternoon and you will quickly know her answer!

First and foremost, he wanted his proposal to be romantic, and make Danielle feel as special as she makes him feel. He also knew he wanted to capture all of the joy and excitement of his proposal with Paparazzi Proposals‘ one-of-a-kind NYC proposal photography!

They were set up by mutual friends, and the first time they met, they all went out to dinner together on a busy Friday night. The restaurant was so crowded and loud, they barely got a chance to talk and connect. It wasn’t until their second date, with just the two of them, that they would have the chance to really get to know each other…and the magic began!

Adam was instantly smitten. Danielle was sweet, attractive, funny, and they shared many of the same interests. The more he spoke to and listened to her, the more attracted he became to her. When asked when he knew she was “the one,” Adam poetically said, “You can’t really explain it, but you just get that vibe, that sense, that feeling, in your body that you don’t get with others.  You can’t get enough of her, you want to spend as much time as you can with her; and when you have to go to work and you can’t be with her, you can’t wait till work is over and you can see her again.” Spoken like a true romantic!

They both have an affinity for New York City, and have always loved grabbing dinner together before catching a Broadway show. So planning “just another NYC date night,” Adam set his secret plan into action. He made a reservation at the legendary 21 Club, and had flowers delivered there prior to their arrival. That wasn’t the only surprise waiting! Discreetly hidden in the distance was Paparazzi Proposals’ photographer, ready to capture every moment before, during and after Adam popped the question!

He handed her a massive bouquet of roses, looked her in the eyes and slowly dropped dropped to a knee. Declaring his love, he asked if she would take his hand in marriage. Once the shock and surprise wore off, Danielle declared “YES!” Talk about a show stopper. An excited group of tourists quickly gathered to watch and applaud the newly engaged couple! So when planning his marriage proposal, Rob knew the Love Statue, for which this legendary park was named after, would be the perfect spot for his proposal. He also knew it would provide the perfect backdrop for Paparazzi Proposals one-of-a-kind surprise proposal photography!

They first met back in 2010 while both attending the University of Delaware. It was Greek Week, and both being in a fraternity and sorority respectively, it allowed their paths to cross…on the dance floor! As Rob puts it, “I asked her to dance, and I was after her ever since then!”

He confesses that he felt she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen and was hypnotized by her beautiful blue eyes. Caity, on the other hand, quickly became infatuated by his huge smile and, as she puts it, “the way he looked into my eyes when he spoke to me.” She also shared that his selflessness made it pretty easy to fall hard for him.

As he enthusiastically pursued her love and attention, he became even more smitten and determined to be with her, now knowing she was the one. As fate would have it, his persistence was what pushed her over the edge in knowing this was man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. Love Park was the spot where he first asked to her officially start dating him, and it would now also be the sight of where they would become an engaged couple!
