It seems everyday we are getting more and more glamorous and over the top proposals being posted to YouTube and on news channel.Is this trend the way forward or are we loosing touch with the basics and the gesture of dropping to one knee and making the proposal speak for itself?

Is bigger better?

Some would argue that with YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook the bigger the proposal the better and it shows your fiancée that you really thought it through and wanted it to be the biggest and best proposal ever seen! This does not have to be the case. Knowing your fiancée and having the little touches that mean a lot to her will speak volumes and will never be expressed in a dance move by a flash mob, unless that is her thing! There does seem to be more and more of an expectation with diamond sizes and proposals that bigger is better, this is not always the case. The MOST important part of any of these decisions, whether it’s the ring or the proposal is knowing your fiancée and what will make her the happiest girl on earth when it happens.

The proposal should be everything she has ever dreamt of, not what you think is cool!

The answer should be fairly obvious to you, if she is one that shy’s away from public displays and does not like to be in the limelight, then a flash mob in a public place is probably not the best idea. You’re engaged! It’s awesome, it’s wonderful, it’s fun…and it’s a LOT of work! Why? Because now you’ve got to plan your wedding! And among the most
important things you need to do for the big day is to hire a wedding photographer.
It should be one of the first things you do, because the best professional
photographers book their schedules a year or two in advance. If you want
outstanding pictures (and who doesn’t?!?), start searching for your photographer
right after you book your catering hall. A wedding photographer’s peak season is
April-November. For bride’s in this season, it’s never too soon to book your
photographer. For those in an “off peak” time of year, 6-12 months is a good
timeline to secure your favorite photographer. So HOW do you choose?

1: Ask family, friends, your cater and other vendors

Good wedding photographers have a reputation of success, and therefore are relatively well known. They should be the easiest to find. Stat your search by asking for recommendations form friends and family who have held weddings prior to your event. Ask if they liked the photographer. Look at their wedding album. Your friends and family will your best interests at heart and you should get the most honest opinions. Additionally, other professionals involved in your wedding day will likely have worked with photographers in the past. Ask for recommendations from your catering hall, florist, DJ/band or limousine driver. If another vendor, such as your caterer, is willing to stake their reputation on recommending someone, odds are high that this photographer is very good.

2: Go check them out!

If you have a list of photographers from which to choose, check out their websites to begin eliminating candidates from your list. Also, give a call and see how friendly they are, if they will discuss pricing over the phone (the good ones will) and see how accommodating they are with their hours.

Upon your visit, what do you think of their offices? Are they located in a well-kept building or storefront? What is your first impression of the space visually? How are you greeted? Are you offered a refreshment? Is the place clean and orderly? All of this speaks to the small details…and if a company takes care of the small details, chances are very good they handle the bigger details in a similar fashion.

 3: How are the photos AND video?

Think about the style that you want your photos to express. Do you and your fiance like traditional posing and a more “classic” look? Or do you prefer more light-hearted, playful and candid photos? There is no wrong answer! It’s what YOU like best that matters! Is there a nice selection of albums? Are they able to show you photos from the venue that you have chosen for your event? Do they handle all work in-house? Examine the basics of the pictures-such as color, clarity, exposure, and composition. Do you LOVE the photos?!? Can you see yourself in these photos?

Next, did they show you a sample video? How was the video? Do they edit their
videos in-house? Are you given the unedited footage? How much input do you have?
Do they offer high definition? Although you are not required to use the same
company for video, it will certainly give you piece of mind and ensure that your
photographer has worked with your videographer. It will also save you in research
time and may reduce overall cost.

4: How do you like the people?

The photographer is the one vendor that you spend the ENTIRE day with and is around after the wedding. So you REALLY need to be sure you like them! Gauge their professionalism. Did they answer all your questions while asking you about your day? If the person you are sitting with is not shooting your event, will you have a chance to meet the photographer who is? (a MUST!) By meeting, you will have a chance to speak with them “one on one” to discuss the details of your day plus their experience, style and vision for your event. Choosing a “studio” over a sole proprietor has it’s advantages: they will have a wider selection of photographers to choose from; they very often have a crew “on call” for back-up; they carry insurance and workman’s comp; plus…caterers and other vendors typically prefer studios for their reputation and professionalism, which can extend beyond what a single individual can offer. So although a single photographer working out of their home may provide nice pictures and good service, a studio offers the security, resources and consistency to ensure that your wedding goes off smoothly.

A word about “newbies”… While not all amateur photographers are created equal, the best way to ensure you receive a quality wedding album is to hire a seasoned professional with a solid background from which to draw. Surely an amateur can shoot some nice photos, but a wedding requires far more than knowledge of a camera. Remember, wedding photography is much different than any other type of photography. The photographer must be a ringleader, therapist, babysitter, travel guide, camp counselor and more! So choosing a true professional is a must. Don’t skimp or choose a “friend of a friend” who recently got into wedding photography. Finally, find out if the photographer has shot at your wedding venue before. If they have, they may know of places to get good shots or ways to capture moments the best.

5: Price, Price & Price!

While you want to make sure you love your photos, get along with the photographer and feel safe and secure in the studio you’ve chosen…you also need one more thing to work: THE PRICE! Budget is as important as any part of the equation when choosing a photographer. So here are a few important things to note: You DO get what you pay for! Some photographers cut corners to give you a “cheaper” price. What corners? How about no insurance…or albums that are made overseas (and fall apart)…or printing done at CVS…or photographers who have shot 3 weddings before your’s (but are cheap to hire)…or even worse: they don’t deliver what they promise, and you wind up in small claims court. You DON’T have to book the big, giant package! You should be able to include what you want…and at the time you want it. Salespeople will try to sell you packages that offer you the “best deal” when in reality, it’s a bunch of stuff you don’t need. Go through the prices and choose only what you need. You can always come back after the wedding to add additional items. Not everyone wants to pay for an album they have yet to receive. So get your pricing ahead of time. Now, packages sometimes do offer a good value, but only if it’s with items/services that you need. Ask lots of questions and make sure you get the answers you want. Remember, YOU are the one paying here!

The FINE PRINT. Make sure you read over the legal details of exactly what you will get before signing the contract. Do you own the rights to your images? Can you print them on your own? Are all the images edited at no additional cost? Will your photos be hosted online? If you add something later on, will you pay the same price as the day of signing? Will it include full coverage of the day? The answer to ALL of the above should be YES! And make sure you find this out and more. Also, make sure that your payment schedule is easily understood and find out what forms of payment are acceptable. If a company accepts credit cards (which most should) they cannot limit how/when you can use your card for payments. Credit cards also offer another layer of protection as they allow for you to dispute a charge if the photographer does not deliver. In closing, no question is a bad question!

For any traditional down on one knee kind of guy this is a no-brainer, but for other less conventional men this is
not even a question that occurs to them.
However, this isn’t a decision that affects only you.

You should know if you don’t already what your soon to be fiancée thinks of the whole concept of her father giving you permission to ask her to marry you. Here are some helpful pointers to help navigate the whole process.

How important will it be to her, but also her father?

What kind of home background is she from? Are her parents still together, does she even still talk to her father?
Simply put, if she laughs off the idea then don’t give it a seconds more thought, but if she says that her dad specifically said he would kill the man who presumed to marry his little girl without permission then it is best to ask the future father-in-law first.
Even so, in today’s liberally minded society approaching another man for permission to essentially possess his daughter is kind of weird. But, some traditions, especially marital are ancient and should be respected.

Face to face or over the phone?

Where at all possible try and do this conversation in person face to face, if this is not the case due to distance a phone call is still better than nothing. So, make sure that you get a private meeting or at least some private time with your girlfriend’s dad when you can. Often meeting at a neutral spot will help calm your nerves, a loud sports bar after several large scotches is also not going to go down too well.

It would be best to make sure he knows this is a man to man talk that should not be shared and very simply make clear your feelings for his daughter.

Promise to love and protect his little girl for all time and hope that he isn’t an ass about the whole thing, or in a perfect world bursts out laughing in your face and says yes. Always remember that a girl’s relationship with her father is very important be that for good or for bad. For those women lucky enough to have a healthy relationship with their dad his approval is all-important and more to the point your respect for that is essential too.

How long do you wait when you have asked his permission?

Now that you have asked the second most important person don’t wait too long till you ask the big question. Keep the momentum going and also be sure to give the dad a heads up as to when it may happen. Also try and ask the father to keep this under his hat, when more people know the more chance of it slipping out! The first call you make will be to her parents so make sure they don’t have major plans that day as they will want to celebrate and congratulate you both.

1. Gauge how your partner will react when you pop the question

This is something you should think very carefully about! If your partner is very emotional and will no doubt burst into floods of tears you may think twice about dropping to one knee in a very public area! Mascara running down her face will not probably be top of the ways she will want to remember the engagement! That said if you think she will like the attention to details and the surprise of a public engagement then you need to get cracking! Also remember to give yourself more time than you think. With more time comes more attention to detail and this will make your engagement go from good to perfect.

2. Buying the engagement ring

This is probably the hardest part of it all. First of all you have to choose your jeweler. This may come from a recommendation from a friend or family member, but just because they had a great experience does not guarantee you one! Make sure you look around and find a store and jeweler that listens to you and what your after. This will be on your partner’s finger for the rest of their life, so you need to make sure it’s right!

Then you have to choose if you’re going to buy the ring beforehand or if you would like to wait and let your partner be apart of that process. There are some ways to help with both of these processes. If you’re going to choose the ring beforehand make sure you do your homework! At some point she will have said what kind of cut diamond she likes, even if its a magazine left open your coffee table. Women are amazing at leaving hints that us men normally miss or ignore! The other important point to remember is that a lot of jewelers will allow you to have a proposal ring. This is a ring that has some value but is not the end product, it allows you to have a ring that sparkles and looks great to drop to one knee with but also allows you both to create the perfect engagement ring together. This is a very useful service and some jewelers may not provide it, so make sure you get what you want out of it and that way you can both surprise her and show you want her to be a part of the experience of actually choosing her perfect engagement ring.

3. Propose on one knee

It is such a worldly recognized symbol it is a must that you drop to bended knee when asking your partner. The custom of proposing on one knee hearkens back to the days of knighthood and chivalry when it was customary for a knight to dip his knee in a show of servitude to his mistress and his master. The knight would kneel before a tournament and wait for “his” lady to toss him her ribbon or colors, as an indication of her favor. This may be dated and not relevant in todays world but it means a lot to her – guaranteed!

4. Try not to tell anyone about the marriage proposal

Even though you may need to get some help from friends or family in the planning and executing of the perfect proposal the more people you tell the greater the chance of it slipping out and her knowing! You also have to be careful of telling people in case something happens and you have to postpone it for a while. Nothing worse than getting everyone excited and then having to explain the delay. It will also help to celebrate the engagement afterwards, the real fun of the engagement comes with champagne, friends and family and the story of how it all happened, so let that raw excitement and happiness be enjoyed by everyone.

5. Ask her father’s permission (and ask him to keep the wedding proposal quiet)

Brandon drove miles to ask Jennifer’s father for her hand in marriage long before their trip to NYC for their proposal!

This is arguably the most important part of any engagement. Not only will it set you right with your in-laws which is very important but it also will mean so much to your fiance. Due to distance or timings even if it over the phone make sure you do it. In person is best and over a drink helps to calm the nerves but it will mean so much to the father and your fiance. One good tip is to try and not leave it too long after asking the father to actually asking his daughter! This also cuts the time and risk of him slipping it out to a family member and ruining it all together!

6. Have a backup proposal plan

Even the best laid plans can sometimes go terribly wrong, due to traffic, weather or something completely unforeseen!
With the help of proposal planners and external help these are limited but always have a back up plan or scenario. This could be something as simple as in front of a fire at home. In this situation the gesture should do the talking and not an elaborate plan.

7. Plan something that is special between the two of you

This is also so key. She may say she loves football and go every Sunday with you to the game, but this does not mean she wants thousands of fans with painted faces and warm beer jumping around her when you drop to one knee! Think about special occasions that you have had in the past that holds a certain importance to you. If its a restaurant you went to when you first met, it is often easy to disguise your proposal plans by saying you’ve made reservations to go again. Try and keep it as normal as possible until you drop to one knee. The reaction and the surprise will be what she always remembers and you can have romantic and special plans ready for afterwards.

8. Be at your best

This one is fairly straightforward but worth remembering. If your going to say a few words when your down on one knee, run through them before hand so you know what to say. Even the most romantic words will come out in a jumble when the adrenaline is flowing. Dutch courage is fine, a small brandy or whiskey to settle the nerves is great, downing half a bottle of scotch will not only stop you remembering half of it but will not be how she has dreamed of the words! Have champagne and a plan ready for afterwards, so that you can go and enjoy the moment even more.

Last but not least… dust off that good suit, get your hair cut and make sure you look your best. Nothing makes you feel more like the man than when you’re in a tailored suit looking your best, and she will really appreciate the efforts you have made.

Are you looking to pull off a surprise marriage proposal?  Do you need some tips on how to do it perfectly?  The Heart Bandits are the only husband & wife, male & female team of Proposal Planners and they provide a unique perspective that helps you get the best possible romantic, personal, and memorable proposal possible.  Here are some great tips to make your marriage proposal a complete surprise:

Use Help

If you can get friends or family, especially her friends or family, to help out in the proposal, then you will have a much higher likelihood of surprising her.  The reason is that though you may be acting differently, the fact that there are others that she trusts involved, it will make it much more likely that she’ll buy into whatever proposal plan you have put together.  Getting help from The Heart Bandits is also a great way to surprise her because all of our proposals have been surprises and we have coached the guy throughout the process so that it goes off without a hitch.  We have even acted as bystanders in some proposals to pull off the surprise.

Have a Plan and Create a Back-Story

You absolutely MUST have a solid plan when you propose.  You should know what’s going to happen throughout the process and what to do in case things do not go exactly as planned (such as rain or snow).  But to make your proposal a complete surprise, you need to have a realistic back-story.  The reason is because it eliminates any uncharacteristic behaviors from you the day-of.  For example, if she knows that you don’t like a certain part of town, it would be very odd if you “ask” her to go to that part of town for your proposal spontaneously.  If you create a back-story a few days before as to why you need to go there, then it will be much more believable.  Whatever the back-story is, you have to be careful that it is not be too out-of-character or too extravagant.

Photograph or Videotape it Discreetly

Pap The Question is a great resource for this.  Capturing your proposal on film or video is something that will go a long way when you reminisce on your relationship in years to come.  That is why you need to have a photographer or videographer that is very knowledgeable in being discreet.  You just cannot have someone in your face during the proposal.  You need someone to not be seen or acting as if they’re part of the scene in order to pull off the ultimate surprise.

Try to Relax

When you propose marriage, let alone have an elaborate plan for your proposal, chances are your nerves may come into play.  You may be worried about a lot of circumstances out of your control and it may throw off how you act around your girl.  The biggest thing to remember in this situation is you must try to relax.   You are there to propose marriage to your sweetheart that you love, not to win the World Series Game 7.  Even if something not-to-plan happens, it will actually be a funny part of your engagement and will make your proposal story more endearing.  So relax, enjoy your moment, and most importantly, be happy that you arrived at this day in your relationship and will take the next step.

How To Pop the Question – The Do’s :

1. Public vs Private Proposal? Who to involve? Who should be present at your marriage proposal? Just the two of you, her family and best friends, or perhaps a cheering crowd? REALLY think this one through. Just because you are a sports fanatic does not mean her idea of a proposal is on the jumbotron. However, If she is a die hard fan, paints her face, and never misses a single game then go for it! We have discovered most women prefer a proposal to take place in a private or semi-private manner. Some women prefer to have family and friends involved. Holidays are fun and personable atmospheres to pop the question. However, remember you will be competing with the busy holidays. There is always the option of an intimate setting for the two of you, followed by a surprise gathering of family and friends.
2. Choose a location wisely. Location is key to setting the mood. This is where you can incorporate favorite memories together. This goes to show just how well you paid attention. However, do not get so caught up in location that it stops you from tuning into your creativity. Start with “how” you’re going to propose rather than “where” you’repopping the question and the possibilities will increase ten fold. For example, if you want to take her to a Broadway musical, think bigger than proposing on stage. One of our proposal clients used the musical’s playbill to ask his girlfriend to marry him with a photo and description of her inside; he explained all her “star” qualities as she was greeted with roses from strangers outside the theater.
3. Attention to Details. Incorporating specific moments and details in your marriage proposal that she wouldn’t expect you to remember will leave her in awe. This is your chance to prove to her that you know her better than anyone else. Remember you want to make the marriage proposal about her by incorporating her interests and what she enjoys doing most with you. In other words, the only way to proposal is to personalize the proposal to your relationship. DO NOT NEGLECT the little details; they are the icing on the cake and quite honestly, the best part!
4. Get Females Perspective. It’s so important to get a females opinion and perspective regarding your marriage proposal idea! Consult her friends, sisters, mom, etc. If you are nervous a close friend or family member may spoil the surprise, this is where The Yes Girls team can help. 7. A Short and Sweet Proposal Speech. Don’t put too much pressure on your proposal speech. Write a list of all the qualities you love about her and why you want her to be your wife. Choose a few to explain during your speech and save that list for her to read later. Extra points for you there!
8. Keep The Surprise Factor. If you aren’t a typically “romantic guy,” planning a special date/getaway out of the blue is a total giveaway. She’ll have an appointment to get her nails done within the hour because it’s so obvious. Ask her friend to be a decoy so she is genuinely surprised.

How To Pop the Question – The Dont’s :

1. Throw out unoriginal clichés. To be blunt, automatically rule out proposals via jumbotrons, fortune cookies, and over a “nice” dinner. If you are unsure on how to propose to your girlfriend, don’t settle because you would rather down play it than risk something going wrong. With a little thought and planning, you can go beyond cliché ideas. If you get stuck, consult her girlfriends/sister/mom or brainstorm ideas with a Yes Girls Consultant to keep it a complete surprise.
2. Don’t Make it All about you. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone just a little. It’s important to think about what your sweetheart would want. Many times we hear of proposals where the guy implements what he thinks is cool rather than what SHE would appreciate. Think about past memories, her favorite things, her personality type, her love language, and you’ll start to cater the proposal to her desires.
3. Poor Planning = Poor Execution. Don’t wait until the week before to start brainstorming your marriage proposal idea. Yes, this can be done (we’ve done it) but it takes away from the extra details you COULD have included had you allotted yourself time to plan and prepare. If you don’t have a plan in place, and decide to wing it, chances are you will be flustered. More so, it WILL show you decided not to put in the time or effort. You only do this once so we promise it’s worth planning.

Don’t Act Out Of Character

You are keeping a big secret from the one person you usually tell everything to; therefore discuss the proposal with someone who can be your voice of reason and prevent you from blowing the surprise.
