Do They Do This Full-Time?

You want a professional to guarantee the quality of your photos.

There are a lot of people who are hobbyist photographers, who have done courses and know how to take pretty pictures, but it may not be their main line of work.

A great way to weed out professionals from amateurs is to give them a call.  If they pick up the phone, you’re golden.  If not, alarm bells should be going off!  Professional photographers are glued to their phones, because that’s how they get news about potential jobs.  Someone who’s serious about what they do will either take your call immediately, or call you back with lightning speed.

Use Google to Your Advantage

Any professional will have a strong online presence, because it is their full-time business.

Searching “best wedding photographer” or “best proposal photographer” in your area actually goes a long way.  It’s going to give you really good gage on who the best and most popular.  Keep an eye out for good reviews on Yelp, Facebook, etc.

Local Knowledge

Your photographer should be giving you advice based on local insight.

The Brooklyn Bridge is tourist central. Consulting with a proposal photographer means that you’re more likely to avoid the crowds and get that incredible reaction photo. From Stephen’s surprise proposal.

Meaning: if where you want to propose is close to a school, and you want to do it at 3:00, they should be able to let you know that it will be crowded.  You want a photographer that knows your while your proposal location might be really busy at 3:00, it’s going to be nice and empty an hour earlier. They should have all of the little details that will help you to eliminate any problems.

With our photographers, we recommend meeting the client at the same location, day of the week and time as the scheduled proposal to see what the area looks like.  Not only does this make for better pictures, these extra efforts show that this person is thinking about your proposal, and is not just trying to turn out cookie-cutter work.

Do They Do Their Research?

They should know what’s going on in the city the day that you want to propose.

For example, I’m currently thinking about this Sunday, when there’s going to be about 200,000 people slugging around Central Park after running 26.2 miles.  How would that impact a Central Park marriage proposal?

These are things that you shouldn’t ever have to stress about.  You’re paying top dollar for a photographer.  Make sure its worth the investment by going with someone who is prepared to work out all the logistics.

Flexibility

It’s your engagement, and you want your proposal photographer to work with you, not just tell you what to do! 

Your photographer should be able to give you helpful suggestions, like tips about lighting and the best way to stand. But if you want to do it in a set spot, they’ve got to be able to work around that and they’ve got to be professional enough to make it work no matter what the circumstances.

Body of Work

They may be a great all-around photographer, but are they a specialist in what you’re looking for?

What we’re seeing more and more of is photographers becoming jacks-of-all-trades, but really not becoming professors of one. For example, you wouldn’t hire a product photographer to shoot your wedding, you’d hire a wedding photographer. So when seeking someone to capture your proposal, you should be looking for someone who specializes in proposal photography.

You want a high volume of proposals in their portfolio, with a variety of different locations, poses and photo compositions!

Discreet Style

Do you really want some random guy or girl standing three feet away from you furiously firing off the shutter while you’re trying to drop down to one knee?

The concept of surprise proposal photography is capturing the proposal and the reaction without intruding in on that moment.  Your client’s partner should have absolutely no idea that the photographer is there taking pictures. 

And of course, that reaction has to be reflected in the work. Making sure the moment is uninterrupted is going to create that reaction shot that your partner will want to remember forever.

It was awesome to work with George to help him capture his creative Chelsea Highline proposal, which included serenading Chrissy with all of their favorite songs!

Enthusiasm

 Your photographer may have photographed hundreds of proposals, but are they interested in yours? 

This to me is almost as important as body of work and skill!While they may have done this before,  it’s your first and only time and you want them to convey confidence and enthusiasm.

They have to be excited about exploring your ideas on where to pop the question and why you want that location, so that they can help you get the best outcome!

Number of Photos

What we’ve noticed is people offering proposal photography, but only giving clients about 25 pictures.

If you’ve never met your photographer before, how are they to choose your 25 images?  You should be getting a professionally edited gallery that is reflective of the whole event, which means at least 125 edited photos. We’re not talking crazy, Vogue-cover photoshop, but we are talking basic color correction and making them all look pretty.  You should have some in black and white, some in color for a good variety.

High Quality Images

This means high resolution photos.

You need your photos to be high resolution for good prints.  A lot of photographers may send you photos that aren’t high-res, and then offer high-res photos for an extra cost.  That is daylight robbery, and if they even suggest that, you should walk on to the next photographer.

Quick Turnaround

You don’t want your photographer to spend 15 hours photoshopping  25 images, because that means you’re only getting a small gallery that takes 3-4 weeks to create.

You want to announce your engagement!  You don’t want to sacrifice quality, but you want to make sure you’re getting them 4-5 days after to share with family and friends.  Make sure the turnaround time is in the contract, and that you agree on it.

Back up plans

The best surprise proposal photographer will be able to control just about everything, except the weather.

But they should have a plan for a rainy day. If the weather is looking dodgy on the day, don’t be afraid to ask the photographer to move it around. They want to capture the best possible pictures, so they should be flexible.

If you’re set on the date, your photographer should have enough local knowledge to provide you with back up plans so that you won’t be standing like a drowned rat on the sidewalk getting sprayed by the X39 bus that’s whizzing past.

You Get What You Pay For

For the same reason you don’t go for a cheap wedding photographer, you shouldn’t scrimp and save when it comes to your proposal. 

This is your foot in the door for a mother-in-law on your side, so go with the best quality over the cheapest price!

Pay half price and you’re going to get half the quality.  That’s a general rule of thumb, and though there are some exceptions, going with the cheapest option is often a risk!

How They Met:

These college sweethearts met when they lived in the same dorm building back in 2010.  Cullen was a Junior and Melissa, a sophomore.

Cullen opted for our Proposal Photography Package 

Cullen noticed her from a distance, and thought she was cute.  So he stopped by her dorm room on his way home from class one day and they started chatting.  He spoke about his family and relayed a story about how he took his little sisters to a movie that week, and she was instantly intrigued by his commitment to his family.

Cullen could tell that Melissa was selective with who she chose to trust, and he enjoyed that about her.  He knew it would be a challenge to impress her, but he was up for it, and he set out to get to know her better!

How They Knew:

Melissa says she knew after their first unofficial date that Cullen was The One.

 After they walked to church together on a Sunday morning, Cullen asked her to join him afterwards to help him pick out a birthday gift for his older sister and go for coffee.

For Cullen, it took until about a year into their relationship, when they went to Baltimore on their first getaway as a couple.  He was so content and at peace when they were taking a walk together around Federal Hill Park, that he knew he never wanted to be with anyone else.

The Surprise Proposal:

Cullen carefully planned his surprise proposal under the guise of a romantic weekend getaway, taking precautions to make sure it was a complete surprise.

He organized another trip to Baltimore, this time with an extra special question to ask! When they reached a scenic point that overlooked all of Maryland, Cullen dropped to one knee and presented her with a gorgeous ring Charisma Jewelers in Rochester, New York.  Judging by her priceless reaction, discreetly captured with our unique brand of proposal photography, it was a total success!

After she said yes, the couple wandered to the nearby American Visionary Art Museum for a unique and stunning post-proposal engagement session!

When the pair moved in together last year, he bought her a wicker picnic basket as a housewarming gift, and they used it every chance they got!  So when it came time for him to pop the question, he knew it would be the best place in Chicago to propose— private, scenic and meaningful to them both!

How They Met:

The happy couple met back in 2007 as new members in a business organization at the University of Illinois.  Mickey was a sophomore, and Jackie was a freshman, and the instant she walked into the room, he was captivated.

They became friends and the next year, she sought out Mickey as an accounting tutor.  He says despite having to work with quite a few students, he would always tend to gravitate towards Jackie and she would often dismiss the other tutors in favor of him.  Their friendship continued to progress until Jackie’s senior year when she was taking a semester to travel abroad.  Although she didn’t know it at the time, Mickey was about to ask her out until he learned about the trip.

The pair fell out of touch for a few years before crossing paths.  This time, Mickey asked her out to dinner and the rest was history!

As they spent time together, it became apparent that even after being apart for several years, they still shared the same sense of humor!

“Not a day goes by without us breaking down into some type of laughing fit!” Mickey gushed.  “From terribly awkward reality television to silly impressions or inside jokes, we find the humor in everything possible!”

How They Knew:

For Mickey, the realization that he had found The One became apparent one night while they were at home watching a movie.  He thought about their future together, how compatible they were, and how he could see himself relaxing on the couch with Jackie one or fifty years from now.

For Jackie, it was when she introduced Mickey to her family and saw how well he fit in that she knew.  That day, she told her dad through a giggling smile that she had found The One!

The Proposal:

Mickey’s thoughtful proposal contained many elements that made it unique to the two of them— and Paparazzi Proposals was able to discreetly capture the whole proposal day with surprise engagement photography!

Mickey filled us in on the behind-the-scenes prep, involving their friends and family!

Mickey’s brother Richie picked out an incredible bottle of Dom Rose and arranged to have it engraved with a special message and the date of their engagement by their dear friend Mike, a glass-blowing teacher at New Trier.  He also picked up a bouquet of flowers from Flora, their favorite flower shop, and drove the two items to a restaurant where they met up with friends and family after their post-proposal portrait session.

When Mickey told Jackie’s sister Brittany that he was going to propose, she helped him with picking out the perfect ring, acting as a liaison between Mickey and Jackie to find out her preferred style while still keeping his proposal plans secret!

How Did You Guys Meet?

Maeve and I first met just after finishing our third year at the University of Georgia. Almost everyone had already left town for summer, but a mutual friend convinced each of us to stay and go out one night so we could be introduced. We met out on the town and spent the rest of the night talking over drinks and pizza. Soon after, we parted ways to return home for the summer, and as Maeve likes to point out, I never called her. However, things quickly picked back up when we returned in the fall, and we formally went on our first date.

Jeff’s Central Park after dark engagement to Tia was as romantic as a Midsummer Night’s Dream.  After dinner, Jeff had arranged for a horse and carriage to pick them up and bring them the Bethesda Fountain.  Here, a musician was waiting to serenade them with their favorite Disney songs!  At the crescendo of The Little Mermaid’s “Kiss the Girl,” Jeff dropped to one knee and asked Tia for her hand in marriage.

Jeff gushed about his experience:

Jeff and Tia attended the same high school.  Jeff, a Varsity ice hockey player, was a year older than cheerleader Tia.  Though the pair had admired each other from afar, they were officially introduced through mutual friends.

Jeff thought Tia was stunning and a cute cheerleader, and Tia was impressed by the handsome upperclassman.  As they began to spend more time together, Jeff’s heart was totally won over by Tia’s intelligence and vibrant personality, and she was won over by his kindness and loving nature.

Jeff asked Tia to his Senior Prom, and the two have been falling in love more and more each day ever since.

How They Knew:

Tia and Jeff both knew early on that they had found The One.  They were happy being together, and wanted to take time to pursue their careers before they took they got engaged.

“We were just happy and content being a couple, being together and being in love!” Said Jeff, adding that he knew for years that he would propose, he was just waiting for it to be the perfect time for them both.

The Proposal:

Jeff took it back to the beginning by planning the proposal at the same location where they took a trip as a couple for the first time.

“We both love NYC and together we both share great memories of prior NYC trips,” he said.  “Every aspect and detail of my proposal to Tia was a reflection of not only prior trips we’ve taken to NYC together, but also reflections of our relationship past, present and as a whole,” he added.

The pair took a carriage ride on their first NYC trip, so he made sure their proposal featured one.  They also often shared dinners at Tavern On The Green, their go-to spot on former trips.  The couple loves taking trips to Disney World together, so he had a musician play a few of their favorite classic songs.

“And, I hope I am her prince she dreamed of her entire life,” he also revealed.

The Build Up

The stunning boat took a loop of the harbor as the sun set, and the pair took in views of the city skyline from the water.

The Proposal

When the time was just right, the boat dropped anchor and Luca dropped to one knee to present her with an incredible ring.

After She Said Yes

They celebrated by sharing a champagne toast before Luca introduced our photographer, and the pair posed for photos as the final rays of sun backlit the Statue of Liberty.

How They Met:

Josh and Danielle were destined to be together.

The happy couple grew up just across the highway from each other in Plano, Texas, but first met each other halfway around the world in Madrid in August of 2008.

They were both studying abroad and had signed up for an excursion to the coastal island Minorca. In the airport, Josh noticed a cute, petite girl in the group and struck up conversation.

They quickly realized they were from the same hometown, and hit it off immediately. The next day, Danielle asked to be his kayaking buddy.

He was instantly attracted to how athletic and open-minded she is, and she was attracted to his sense of humor and his ability to get along with everyone.

They continued to spend time together, going on adventures. Two weeks later, while they were hiking near Madrid, Josh kissed her for the first time.

They’ve been inseparable ever since.

Throughout the rest of the semester, they continued to travel together to other countries, including Portugal, the Czech Republic and Morocco.

When they were back home and back to reality, they realized the connection they had made abroad outlasted their travels.

“We decided we couldn’t be without each other and started officially dating in April of 2009.”

How They Knew:

Their relationship was long distance while the pair completed their undergraduate degrees.

While they were in school, Danielle was only able to visit a few times. Josh already knew she was The One, but his feelings were confirmed when his friends told him they felt they knew Danielle after only meeting her briefly.

Later in the relationship, Josh was in Thailand and Danielle went to visit. He had planned an entire week’s worth of romantic activities, including a canal tour, a rooftop hotel dinner and a few nights’ stay at a beautiful beach resort. But Danielle’s initial feelings that she had found The One were confirmed when he planned a rock climbing adventure.

“He managed to plan something that he knew I would love even if he didn’t. The fact that he went out of his way to make sure I could do that while we were there just totally got me!” She said.

The Engagement:

Josh knew he wanted to pop the question before his sister’s wedding in August so that Danielle could be part of the family.

He planned for their trip to Chicago as the perfect “surprise element” for their engagement, and consulted with friends, family and Paparazzi Proposals to help him plan and capture their big moment!

When he dropped to one knee, she immediately said yes to a stunning ring from the Diamond Doctor in Dallas!

A Walk Down Memory Lane in Seattle

Paul and Gagan went on a walk, pausing at a picnic table to sit and chat.  But Paul had a surprise in mind!  When Gagan turned around, she saw chalkboard.  Written on it were memories and landmark dates of their relationship.  The last line had the date of that day, with the phrase “And then, she said….”  After wiping away tears of joy, Gagan wrote, “Yes!” And Paul placed a delicate rose gold ring on her finger.

Kevin had planned to have our beautiful beach proposal package set up at Crystal Cove in California. He lead a blindfolded Kathreen down the path to the beach, removing it  once they got to the picnic blanket to reveal a gorgeous picnic spread and a sparkling ring!
