In the New Orleans proposal ideas outdoors, a simple “Will you marry me?” flows into the universe to become a scene in nature and a timeless film.  

Nature provides a proposal movie scene and a budget friendly stage.  

City Park

The entrance to The Peristyle at 1 Palm Drive, one of our favorites, is completely free.   

Peristyle has open green spaces and towering columns. They look picture perfect in every photo. The symmetry of the structure complements every couple, our photographers favor it. Stately, but not to the point of being towering.   

There are no issues with parking on Dreyfous Drive but there is some weekend joggers and family activities. Certainly not a problem, it’s just to stay a little earlier. Under the structure, the light remains gentle, even on a sunny day, which is optimal for photos.   

The New Orleans Botanical Gardens, with an entrance at 5 Victory Ave, is just a stone’s throw away, and charges an entry fee of $25 for non-residents and $15 for residents.   

It has the potential to be a proposal that feels like it’s straight out of a fairytale. It’s ideal for a simple picnic, or for a more elaborate floral arrangement. We have found that visiting in the late morning or late afternoon works best, because you’ll have both soft, natural light and some intimacy.   

It is, however, closed on Mondays. If you are after a specific area, it is best to call prior. The rose garden and the area with the bamboo have nice soft lighting. 

Audubon Park – The Tree of Life

If you are dreaming of a nature proposal without the hassle of organizing a full production, this spot is for you. The canopy is created by the enormous branches of the tree. You can see and appreciate the awe this tree brings to the park.   Neighborhood streets provide limited parking. Plan to arrive earlier in the day. The branches help a lot with sound. So a musical setup for under the canopy would be great. 

Lake Pontchartrain

The Lakefront along Lake Pontchartrain is perfect if your partner is all for calm and minimalism.   An escape from the city created by open skies and the soft lapping of water. Stroll the piers or hold a water side kiss. String lights add to the ambience, but are not necessary. Sunset visits are sure to take your partner’s breath away. 

A light jacket is recommended, wind can be strong. 

Landmark Places to Propose in New Orleans 

Some love stories deserve the most landmark places to propose in New Orleans.  

Jackson Square is near and has the perfect historic charm and cinematic feel. For free too! If you want a film-like setting for your proposal, this is your spot. Get down on one knee between the St. Louis Cathedral and the wrought iron fences while live jazz from the French Quarter plays in the background. 

Make sure to come early in the morning to avoid the large crowd that gathers later in the day. If you’re looking for a more quiet spot, the gardens are a good go but remember to stay off the main pathways! 

Fountain Courtyards on Pirate’s Alley are perfect for intimacy and charm. If you are looking for privacy, it is possible, and there is no entrance fee. 

A classic New Orleans courtyard features a candlelit ambiance, and you get the elegance of a fountain and wrought-iron gates. It is an intimate setting, but it is not over the top. Your partner will appreciate the privacy. 

Some, but not all, of the courtyards are public. Others have private access through historic buildings or hotels. Tell us what style you have in mind, and we can assist. 

Proposal Spots in New Orleans from Our Photographers’ Vault 

Some of our New Orleans photographers have documented proposals in overlooked locations, and we suggest to our clients that we offer them a unique experience. These are locations that seem to have been made just for them. 

If you are looking for the perfect mix of privacy and not feeling isolated, the Mansion Gazebo is a great choice. Some venues can be used for a small fee or rental and all have great oaks and grassy areas. This is the stuff of fantasy proposals. 

If your loved one enjoys the beautiful skyline, the Virgin Hotels Rooftop is the perfect choice. Sunset is undoubtedly the best time, and of course, the light is great all the way through the evening. 

A small personalized touch like a flower arch or a few lanterns would be perfect. 

A vintage Rolls-Royce is a classic proposal vehicle. Driving down the oak lined streets, find a quiet corner of the French Quarter or Uptown, where you can pop the ring. 

Bring champagne, flowers, and candles to beautifully enhance the classic proposal moment. Don’t forget to pre-plan a place to stop, because under the oak trees, the lighting is perfect from about 4-6pm.  

New Orleans Proposal Spots Inside

When proposing, the last thing you want is for the weather to be a killer. 

For a low weather risk proposal, we suggest a hybrid of indoor and outdoor locations. For example, a courtyard or a rooftop hotel with fountains. It sets the romantic outdoor vibe while having the indoor option. 

In our experience, a focused blend of indoor and outdoor is ideal. Subtle decor and lighting can be a perfect testament to your history.  

Whispers of Advice from Our Photographers 

After doing this for so long, Paparazzi Proposals understands what looks great in a proposal and what will have that same timeless look 40 years down the line and have identified 5 of these things. 

1. Arrive before the day you plan to shoot. This ensures that you understand what works. You can analyse the lighting, decide which angles align, and find a place to shoot from that is away from onlookers. 

2. The details are important, but it is better to keep these details minimalistic and straightforward. You do not have to hire a whole production crew for this, a couple of candles and some flowers will do. 

3. Golden hour is the time when the light is at its softest, and that is ideal for photography, so it should not be ignored. Golden hour is either at sunrise or in the late afternoon. A gnol hour time is preferable, and during this time it is also great if there are not too many people, this means that it is not a spectator sport. 

4. Always check the weather outside beforehand. Weather can turn for the worse at any time. 

5. Let go of any unrealistic and idealistic thoughts that you picture in your head. Your significant other will be saying yes to you and not to the scenery around. Hold onto that thought and it will make everything simpler.

Some of the most popular areas are Jackson Square and the Peristyle. This is probably due to the fact these areas are scenic and instagramable, alongside being close to all the other attractions. Popular spots are not always the ideal spots. When it comes to the most ideal spot, it is determined by what your significant other would envision for the moment. 

Will I need special permission to pop the question at some venues? 

For the majority of outdoor locations, permission isn’t needed for an uncomplicated proposal. That said, some private courtyards and venues may require advance permission. Start by selecting your preferred site.

In most cases, the best time is sunset. The city’s warm light makes for amazing, high-quality photographs in the moment. Early mornings are also an option, especially for places like the Botanical Garden or Jackson Square.

Point Dume

Located at the edge of the Malibu Canyon, Point Dume offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean below.  The brief hike from the beach to the summit of the cliff is well worth it:  on one side, there’s a field of wild, blooming yellow daisies, and to the other, a hidden cove only viewable from the outlook point.  Point Dume is also known as the perfect spot to catch a glimpse of whales and dolphins– so they may make a surprise appearance at your engagement!  Stop by the Sunset Restaurant and Bar for cocktails with a view, either before or after you pop the question.  Or, if you’d rather have your entire proposal take place outdoors, arrange for a picnic blanket with a dozen roses and your favorite champagne to be waiting for the two of you either on the shore or at the summit.

Leo Carillo

The waves here make it a favorite for surfers, but it’s the incredible rock formations that make this beach perfect for surprise engagement photography.  Whether the two of you have plans to camp nearby, or are visiting for a stroll on the scenic shores, this location is a star proposal spot.

Surfrider Beach

If the two of you are all about sun, sand and surf, this could be the perfect spot for you.  The shoreline itself is small, but there is a pier nearby and surfers always riding the waves.  Before or after you pop the question, perhaps arrange for a tour (and incredible photography!) at the nearby historic Adamson House and Malibu Lagoon Museum.  The April through October, the National Park’s beachfront grounds are open for bookings and special events.

Santa Monica State Beach

This is the perfect location for anyone visiting from out of town.  Miles of sand and coastline stretch in either direction, and iconic little blue Lifeguard stations dot the panoramic view.  But the best part about this stretch of beach is its proximity to downtown Santa Monica.  Have a world-class dinner at the Third Street Promenade before wandering down to the Santa Monica Pier to propose, like Nathan did!

Venice Beach

This iconic beach’s funky charm draws crowds from all over the country!  This beach draws its name from the manmade canals that surround the shorefront, constructed in 1905 to imitate the Italian city of the same name.  It serves as the backdrop for countless movies and music videos– so why not your proposal as well?  Rent some rollerblades and skate down the colorful walkway to take in the street art and interesting store fronts, pausing at the point of your choosing to pop the question!

Paradise Cove

This Malibu gem is nestled into a cozy cove and lined by palm trees.   Home to the Paradise Cove Cafe, this stretch of shore has lounge chairs set up right on the beach– so you can sip a cocktail with your toes in the sand.  Malibu locals frequent the quaint hang out, which means that celeb sightings are not uncommon.  Give your special someone the star treatment by surprising them with a proposal as the sun sets over the Pacific.

El Matador

Ryan’s proposal was a little different from the other rooftop proposals we’ve seen. We got to see a different view of the Dallas skyline that’s never really highlighted.

Every city has something unique about them. The same thing applies to couples. There’s a little something that sets every couple apart from one another. Ryan and his fiancee have that powerful connection that many might not see but they sure feel it. Ryan planned a rooftop proposal and Proposal Ideas was there to assist him in his proposing.

This gorgeous couple went out for a fun Sunday and came back engaged!

The air during March has a different feel in New York City. People are slowly starting to come out of their cave and others begin to occupy the streets once again. With March practically flying by, Rahim made sure that March 2015 would be memorable. The weather was perfect for a nice stroll through the park. With strangers and their families secretly waiting for Rahim and Ria to seal the deal, you can tell that Rahim made sure that every detail was thought out. Rahim also came armed with Paparazzi Proposals and the amazing tunes by 45 Riots. Ria, this wasn’t just any ordinary day.

As our couple made their way towards the Bethesda Fountain, that’s when our snappers started going off and the musician began to get ready. What song did Rahim select? None other than For you by Kenny Lattimore. The mood began to settle in as the butterflies in Rahim’s stomach were more alive than ever. He was getting prepared to ask for Ria’s hand in marriage. You can tell that the element of laughter is so important in this couple’s life. They’re always smiling and that’s what we love to see from a proposal. Smiling couples make our day! They later made their way to the boat house where their loved ones were patiently waiting to congratulate their Rahim and Ria. This was a family affair! Kudos to you Rahim. With the help of the staff at the Ritz Carlton, Ryan had arranged for a private sunset dinner for two overlooking the beach. After the appetizers were brought out, so was the first of many surprises for the evening.

Ryan played a short video of a jeweler meticulously crafting of a special one of a kind ring. As Amy watched the video come to an end, he held her hand and helped her to her feet. Looking into her eyes, and professing his undying love for her, he revealed secret #2, the ring from the video! As tears welled in her eyes, Ryan slowly got down on one knee and asked if she would spend the rest of their lives together. Amy quickly shook off the shock to declare “YES!”

They popped a bottle of champagne and our photographer, hidden and secretly taking pictures of the proposal (secret #3!), now made himself known. Amy was delighted Ryan had arranged proposal photography to capture the actual moment he proposed, to share with friends and family, and cherish these photographs for a lifetime. After enjoying an all-morning tour of New York City’s parks, Iain had planned one last stop for the afternoon. Jane thought it was just to grab a quick lunch. Yes, lunch was a part of the plan, but before they could eat Iain just needed a certain question answered.

He knew he wanted to propose. However, he no idea how he should do so or where he should do it. In need of some proposal ideas, he enlisted the help of 45 Riots and Brilliant Event Planning. They helped arrange for a sneaky but special proposal! With a giant banner displaying the words “Will you marry me?” positioned directly below the rooftop on which they were dining, Iain walked Jane over to the edge and had her peek down to the park below. As she noticed and read the sign aloud, Iain “assumed the position,” getting down on bended knee. After her shock subsided, Jane excitedly and proudly declared “YES!”
