New York Engagement Proposals: Mike and Shari

One of our favorite New York engagement proposals was Mike and Shari’s.

What started out as a romantic stroll on the pier, quickly turned into a moment neither of them would ever forget. As Mike took her to the spot where they had their first date, Shari turned around to find him down on one knee with a diamond ring.

After the big kneeling moment and all the excitement, the newly-engaged couple shared with us how they met and, eventually, fell in love.

How and when did you guys meet?

Shari: “We swiped right! Yes, true love does exist on the internet! I wish I could remember the exact date and time I first saw Mike’s cute face, but I do know we talked for about 2 weeks before setting up our first date. We ended up meeting at Lelabar in the West Village on May 12, 2015.”

Mike: “Yes, it was love at first swipe! Although, the bottle or two of wine we took to the face on our first date didn’t hurt!”

What was the first thing that attracted you to one another?

Shari: “I mentioned Mike’s cute face already right? Well, on the app, his profile picture really stood out to me. He had on this big goofy smile and was waving to the camera. Such a different change of pace from all the guys with their dogs in their profile pictures. His tag line was also “looking for love in all the wrong places,” so I knew he had a great sense of humor. Check, check.”

Mike: “My smile is not big or goofy, but that’s besides the point. One of Shari’s first profile pictures was of her in like a pirate hook…umm let’s say business woman, yea businesswoman, halloween costume, holding a tray of jello shots – so I could tell she was a thinker! Honestly, after just a few correspondences with her and after how much this stranger could make me laugh, I knew I had to meet her; I was hooked.”

When did you know that they were the one?

Shari: “Mike and I talked about moving in together after only dating for 6 months. I knew if I was already considering that with him (which I had never done with anyone else before), he must be it.”

Mike: Saturday, August 8th, 2015. I had hosted a get together for a ton of my family. Shari and I hadn’t been dating long, but we were already so close, so I took a chance and invited her; she accepted and instantly hit it off with everyone. It was as if she had known everyone as long as I had. I told her I loved her for the first time that night…and she made me wait till the morning for her to say it back!”

Why did you choose to propose where you did?

Shari: “Oh I know…”

Mike: “Excuse me, this is my part, dear. Our first date, as we mentioned above, didn’t end at Lelabar. Afterwards, we had taken a walk down to the greenery along the Hudson. We had found a large rock to sit on and look out at the water. We had our first kiss there, and it was truly one of the most surreal moments of our relationship; not just because it was a good kiss, but because some random stranger with his shirt off came up to us and began playing the guitar and serenading us at that very moment. Gotta love NYC.”

Shari: “We may have also snuck onto a docked cruise ship after that…”

Mike: “Babe, not on the internet! So anyway, we had spoken about that first date for years but had never been back to that spot. I knew I had to recreate it, minus the breaking and entering. When I went back there 2 weeks before the proposal to find our rock, I found out that unfortunately the area has changed quite a bit, and they had removed it 🙁 but in the rock’s place they constructed the beautiful archways and gardens you see in the proposal pictures. I knew this would do just fine!”

Did anyone help you plan the proposal?

Shari: “Yeah, did anyone?!”

Mike: “I’ve had the idea for this proposal outlined for quite a long time, but I definitely enlisted the aid of a few key individuals to make sure all the details aligned perfectly. Shout outs to our friend Rachel for hooking me up with some ring guidance via Shari’s private pinterest board (and for keeping the secret so long!), to our friend Mallorie for convincing Shari to get a manicure with her the night before the proposal (and convincing her that bright green would be a terrible color on her!), and to my best friend Ian and his soon-to-be bride Alicia for listening to my proposal ideas and helping me translate my thoughts into a tangible plan (including figuring out how to incept Shari’s mind into picking all the details of our date – Yes Shari had no idea this engagement was coming because this entire “date night” was her idea). And of course, a huge thank you to Paparazzi Proposals for helping capture truly one of the most magical nights of our life!”

Where did you purchase the ring?

Mike: “I purchased it and had it designed custom from a small family business along Jeweler’s Row in Philadelphia. They only do friend and family referrals, so I was incredibly fortunate to get to work with them as it was a far more enjoyable process than I ever thought it could be! Not every kiss begins with Kay!”
