Ladies! Get proposing on the 29th of February – it’s a tradition you know…
OK, so we know it’s Valentine’s Day in February and that there will be thousands of guys out there ready to propose on the most romantic day of the year, but as 2012 is a leap year, the old tradition of ‘St Bridget’s complaint’ comes into play for you ladies.
The leap year engagement tradition
Although there is no longer a stigma about women proposing to men, it is still not very common and that’s why the 29th of February on a leap year is such a magical day. Who needs a better excuse? If you’re sure that the time is right then why not pop the question and take advantage?
It is believed this tradition was started in 5th century Ireland when St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick about women having to wait for so long for a man to propose. According to legend, St. Patrick said the yearning females could propose on this one day in February during the leap year.
