Point Dume

Located at the edge of the Malibu Canyon, Point Dume offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean below.  The brief hike from the beach to the summit of the cliff is well worth it:  on one side, there’s a field of wild, blooming yellow daisies, and to the other, a hidden cove only viewable from the outlook point.  Point Dume is also known as the perfect spot to catch a glimpse of whales and dolphins– so they may make a surprise appearance at your engagement!  Stop by the Sunset Restaurant and Bar for cocktails with a view, either before or after you pop the question.  Or, if you’d rather have your entire proposal take place outdoors, arrange for a picnic blanket with a dozen roses and your favorite champagne to be waiting for the two of you either on the shore or at the summit.

Leo Carillo

The waves here make it a favorite for surfers, but it’s the incredible rock formations that make this beach perfect for surprise engagement photography.  Whether the two of you have plans to camp nearby, or are visiting for a stroll on the scenic shores, this location is a star proposal spot.

Surfrider Beach

If the two of you are all about sun, sand and surf, this could be the perfect spot for you.  The shoreline itself is small, but there is a pier nearby and surfers always riding the waves.  Before or after you pop the question, perhaps arrange for a tour (and incredible photography!) at the nearby historic Adamson House and Malibu Lagoon Museum.  The April through October, the National Park’s beachfront grounds are open for bookings and special events.

Santa Monica State Beach

This is the perfect location for anyone visiting from out of town.  Miles of sand and coastline stretch in either direction, and iconic little blue Lifeguard stations dot the panoramic view.  But the best part about this stretch of beach is its proximity to downtown Santa Monica.  Have a world-class dinner at the Third Street Promenade before wandering down to the Santa Monica Pier to propose, like Nathan did!

Venice Beach

This iconic beach’s funky charm draws crowds from all over the country!  This beach draws its name from the manmade canals that surround the shorefront, constructed in 1905 to imitate the Italian city of the same name.  It serves as the backdrop for countless movies and music videos– so why not your proposal as well?  Rent some rollerblades and skate down the colorful walkway to take in the street art and interesting store fronts, pausing at the point of your choosing to pop the question!

Paradise Cove

This Malibu gem is nestled into a cozy cove and lined by palm trees.   Home to the Paradise Cove Cafe, this stretch of shore has lounge chairs set up right on the beach– so you can sip a cocktail with your toes in the sand.  Malibu locals frequent the quaint hang out, which means that celeb sightings are not uncommon.  Give your special someone the star treatment by surprising them with a proposal as the sun sets over the Pacific.

El Matador

Another beach notable for its incredible caves and rock formations, this quiet beach is located at the end of a long dirt road.  Be prepared to walk down a set of stairs, and to take in the incredible views!  Once you’ve reached a quiet section of shore, drop down to one knee and pop the question before walking through incredible rock formations for a stunning engagement shoot!

An engagement photo session is the perfect way to show the world your romantic journey together. Where you first met, the location of your first date, and the spot you shared your first kiss can all help tell the story of your relationship while also making for an amazing backdrop for these heartwarming photographs. These pictures make for a great save the date or engagement announcement.

A successful engagement portrait session isn’t as simple as grabbing a camera, stepping outside and having someone shoot pictures of you and your fiancee. There’s a lot to think about and plan for in order to allow these photographs to truly capture how special your relationship is. There are many things to consider beforehand to ensure your engagement photo session is a success. So we asked Greg Rhein, our Chief Editor and Photographer, for his insight as to what things one should think about when arranging an engagement shoot. Here are his top 5 things to consider when planning these shots:

Location – Think about places which are special to you and your partner. Pick locations that have meaning  and were a part of your journey together. Also think about some picturesque settings as well. The more beautiful the backdrop, the more stunning your photographs will look. You also want to be conscious of the foot traffic at the locations you choose. Times Square in Manhattan is great, but depending on the time you shoot, getting a clear shot may be an impossibility. This leads us to our next topic.

Timing – The time you choose to shoot can make all the difference in how good the final product is. If one of your locations is in a crowded area, shooting early may help mitigate that. Sure, people can be photoshopped out, but the more intricate the editing, the higher the cost may be to do so. Shooting earlier in the day can also help provide better lighting. Once the afternoon arrives, the sun light tends be harsher and negatively affects the outcome of the photos. Schedule and plan ahead, not only do you have limited time with optimal light, you also have a predetermined amount of time to spend with a photographer. Plan out where you want to shoot in advance and have backup plans for if a location may not work out due to weather or other factors beyond your control. Lastly, keep in mind how long it may take you to travel between locations if doing more than one. When paying for a photography session, time is of the essence so you want to be as efficient as possible.

Attire– Wear what you are comfortable in. These pictures are meant to showcase your personality as a couple, so be genuine and stay true to who you are. Do you like to dress up? Great! Do you and your partner tend to dress more casual? Then go for it!  Another important thing to think about is the colors present at the location you are shooting. You want to contrast nicely with the background. Is the facade of the building where you met white? Then choose a color that will pop against that backdrop. Dress for the weather. You don’t want to be shivering as you try to smile. On the flip side, you don’t want to be wiping the sweat off your brow in between shots. While weather may dictate what you can or can’t wear, try not to wear clothing that may obscure your face or any physical attributes you like to show off or, on the other end of the spectrum, show off too much.

Hair, Makeup and Primping – Again, do what you will be most comfortable with and what is natural for you . Do you rarely wear makeup? Well, suddenly having a full face of makeup caked on may look awkward and may not capture who you really are. If you do choose to wear makeup, go for subtlety. Less is more. Also remember, this is an engagement shoot. You are going to want to show off that gorgeous new ring. So a fresh manicure is a great idea, but remember to choose your color wisely. Also, depending on the time of year, think about putting your hair back, ladies. Nothing is worse than spending the day battling to keep your hair out of your face while trying to get the perfect shot.

Choosing a Photographer– Sure, your friend may have a fancy state-of-the-art camera, but do they know how to get the most out of it? Sure, it may be cheaper to use a friend or family member, but you wind up getting what you paid for.  These photographs are not something you want to skimp on. Using an experienced professional photographer can help you achieve stunning results. They are experienced in getting great shots and can provide you with direction to get the best results. They are also experienced in what lighting is needed for optimal results, both natural and artificial. In addition, they are experts in composition and balance, able to properly leverage the environment and the position of objects to achieve a superior look and feel. All that being said, always remember this is your day, so don’t be afraid to speak up and tell them what you want. When they have a vision of how you want things to look, they can better help achieve the style you desire. Most importantly, a professional can masterfully edit photos to help correct any of the the items mentioned above that weren’t addressed properly during the shoot. With the help of her brother and a few friends, he brought her to what she thought was a simple rooftop reunion dinner with some old friends. Unbeknownst to her, that was only half the plan!

Once they reached the roof,  a pathway lined with rose petals immediately grabbed her attention. As they made their way towards the end of the path, she noticed a small table lined with some more flowers and champagne. As she wondered where her friends may be and why this odd little table was sitting there, she noticed one last item…a diamond engagement ring! As Alex slowly dropped to a knee and asked her to marry him, their friends and family, who were patiently waiting behind the scenes, began to emerge and congratulate the two. The epic celebration had begun!

After enjoying an all-morning tour of New York City’s parks, Iain had planned one last stop for the afternoon. Jane thought it was just to grab a quick lunch. Yes, lunch was a part of the plan, but before they could eat Iain just needed a certain question answered.

He knew he wanted to propose. However, he no idea how he should do so or where he should do it. In need of some proposal ideas, he enlisted the help of 45 Riots and Brilliant Event Planning. They helped arrange for a sneaky but special proposal! With a giant banner displaying the words “Will you marry me?” positioned directly below the rooftop on which they were dining, Iain walked Jane over to the edge and had her peek down to the park below. As she noticed and read the sign aloud, Iain “assumed the position,” getting down on bended knee. After her shock subsided, Jane excitedly and proudly declared “YES!”
