Where to Propose in New York at Christmas: Romantic Holiday Spots You’ll Never Forget

To commemorate December every year, New York is turned into a land of lights, sounds, and cinematic magic. As a proposal agency, we’ve helped couples make this city into their own fairy tale. Ice-skating beneath towering skyscrapers, candle-lined bridges weighed down with snow, and much more! These are our favorite spots to proposal-situate this festive time of year.

A couple is standing together outdoors in New York during the holiday season. They are holding hands and smiling at the camera. Behind them there is a large Christmas tree decorated with colorful lights, along with festive winter decorations and blurred city buildings. The scene looks warm and joyful, capturing a celebratory moment in a busy holiday setting.

5th Avenue

There is no better place to start a Christmas story other than 5th Avenue. The whole street is lit up with elaborate light shows erected by such establishment names as Saks, Cartier, and Tiffany. Amongst these lighted windows and horse-drawn carriage shows moving along 5th Avenue, you almost feel like you are walking inside a Christmas movie.

Insider tip: The building with the red ribbon is definitely one of the most romantic spots to take a picture in this city. This is where you should plan to propose, early in the morning when there aren’t that many people on the street and the lights are still on. Generally, we recommend placing our hidden photographer across the street with you and your loved one posing against this golden background. To celebrate your engagement, take a short walk to Ralph’s Coffee to have some hot chocolate.

A couple is standing close together on Fifth Avenue in New York during the holiday season. They are smiling at each other while holiday lights, festive store decorations, and busy street activity create a bright and lively backdrop. The woman is wearing a white outfit with a fur vest and a bow headband, and the man is wearing a dark coat with a red scarf. The scene captures a warm romantic moment in the middle of New York’s Christmas atmosphere.

Bethesda terrace in Central Park

Bethesda Terrace is where NYC shows its romantic side. The tile ceiling, arches, and pretty view of frozen water make it suited to romantic couples who like a classic, movie setting. During Christmas, violinists play festive music nearby, while the illumination reflecting off the fountain image is like being inside a painting.

For those couples that are completely invested in this one moment, this design goes hand in hand with “Marry Me” letters, rose petals, and candlelight. The buildings provide grandeur while still being intimate.

A man is proposing to his partner at Bethesda Terrace in Central Park. He is kneeling with an open ring box in his hand while she smiles and looks down at him. They are standing under the iconic arches with the staircase in the background. The warm lighting and historic architecture create a romantic atmosphere, highlighting this special moment in one of New York’s most famous landmarks.

Bow Bridge

One of the most romantic locations on this planet, and during winter, snow is gently falling on its arches, and you can see the reflection of Manhattan’s skyline on the frozen part of the pond underneath. This bridge is seemingly balancing between nature and city life, and any proposal done on this site is already like something out of a movie.

Insider information: Get there just after sunrise, while there is still room to sit on this popular corner. The plan is to have cut flowers on the rail and a hidden musician on one of the paths singing your song. Capture your proposal on camera while they say yes.

A man is proposing to his partner in the snow near Bow Bridge in Central Park. He is kneeling on one knee while she holds an umbrella above them and looks down at him. Snow is falling heavily and the landscape is covered in white, with the iconic Bow Bridge visible in the background. The scene captures a romantic winter proposal in one of New York’s most picturesque locations.

Central park the Plaza view

To be at The Plaza View in Central Park is like being in a romantic film. From this position, you can watch how there is a reflection of the Manhattan skyline on the pond, how The Plaza Hotel shines bright at the back, and how serene Central Park is on both sides. When it is winter, snow is on the ground, icicles hang on the trees, and horse-drawn carriages go by.

Insider info: This is definitely one of our favorite spots to take engagement photos because you can take a picture of both nature and architecture within one shot. We will make a heart-shaped design out of rose petals on the ground and position our photographer slightly behind to take a picture of both the cityscape, pond, and finally, acceptance.

The Plaza View is the ideal spot to propose to your partner if you want to live like those couples at Central Park but without having to contend with crowds like those found at Bow Bridge and Bethesda Terrace. The best time to propose is early morning to take advantage of sunlight and 4 p.m., when the city lights up behind you.

A man is proposing to his partner in Central Park with a clear view of The Plaza Hotel and the Manhattan skyline in the background. He is kneeling inside a heart made of red rose petals while she stands in front of him, smiling and looking down at the ring. Light snow covers the ground and the frozen pond behind them adds a winter atmosphere to this romantic New York proposal scene.

Dumbo

For couples who love cityscapes and energy, DUMBO is a dream come true. The cobblestone roads, industrial brick walls, and Manhattan Bridge towering above make it very difficult to beat this spot when it comes to taking a memorable photo. The addition of lights during December gives this spot an extra special ambiance.

Pro tip: our favorite time is during golden hour, when the sun shines on to the bridge and lights up everything gold. We like to put our couple on Washington Street, with the bridge directly behind them, and then take them to Pebble Beach to capture a romantic moment there. As an option to go big, we can organize letters reading “MARRY ME” underneath the archway and lights on the cobblestones.

A man is proposing to his partner at a decorated spot on the waterfront in DUMBO, New York. He is kneeling inside a heart made of roses while she smiles and looks at the ring. A violinist stands nearby playing live music. Behind them the Manhattan Bridge and the city skyline stretch across the background, creating a classic New York proposal scene with a romantic atmosphere.

Proposal on the Ice in Central Park

A fun and cinematic experience can be found at Wollman Rink, which is a winter wonderland. The cityscape is one with you as you glide hand-in-hand across the snow. The view of the city gives a picture-perfect background to every photo!

Pier 17

Pier 17 offers both the peacefulness of the water and views of the Brooklyn Bridge. During the holiday season, it is decked out with garlands, lights, and igloos available to rent. The blowing of Christmas music can be heard from a market that is close by.

Advice on proposals: The best time to take photos is during sunset or blue hour. W can provide you with champagne and roses. This setting is both cozy, private, and chic.

The river, the pier structure, and the tall downtown buildings create a dramatic urban backdrop for this romantic New York proposal moment.

Indoor Christmas Proposal

Other times, proposals can occur indoors where everything is warm, intimate, and private. During the holiday seasons, restaurants, penthouses, and other venues in New York become romantic havens enveloped with fairy lights and candlelight.

Just picture yourself bringing your partner into a dimly lit room with a giant heart made up of red roses above you, while candles line up on the ground, and a radiant message like “Will You Marry Me?” is placed at the back. The air is filled with a subtle fragrance of flowers and vanilla, while music is playing softly in the background.

Insider tip: If you want an ambiance like this one, we can actually take a private dining area or a boutique suite and make it happen. We incorporate flower arches, heart-shaped arrangements, balloons, and string lights to make you envision this ambiance. Indoor proposals during December are ideal because you can remain warm while being around festive-themed items.

Red heart balloons decorate both sides of the space, and a neon sign that reads Will You Marry Me is displayed against a backdrop of twinkling string lights. The room is styled to create an intimate and elegant atmosphere for a private proposal celebration.

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

This is definitely one of the best places to experience Christmas in NYC. The huge tree, lights, and music make it impossible to not feel festive. Just beware, due to crowds, timing is everything. Go around midnight when there are fewer people, but the tree is still lit up. Do not forget to capture this moment on camera with a professional photographer!

A man proposes to his partner at Rockefeller Center in New York. He is kneeling on the pavement holding a ring box while she smiles at him. In the background the famous Rockefeller Christmas tree glows with lights and crowds of people walk through the festive holiday scene. This moment captures a classic New York City proposal in one of its most iconic winter locations.

The Edge

To make your proposal feel like it is reaching the Sky High level, you can’t go wrong with The Edge. The Edge is elevated over one thousand feet above Manhattan and gives you a 360-degree view of the city. The glass floor and walls make you feel like you are hovering above Manhattan. The view of Manhattan lights is almost surreal once the sunset arrives.

Insider tip: Get the earliest or last time slot to ensure you have some privacy. The sunrise proposals are absolutely stunning here—there aren’t any crowds, and you can have the whole platform to yourself. Now, proposing at sunset sounds romantic, but you can make it more memorable by bringing some winter bouquet and having a photographer with you who can mingle with other on-lookers. To celebrate, head to Peak Restaurant, which is merely one level up, to toast with champagne while taking in the city view.

A man proposes to his partner at The Edge in New York, one of the highest outdoor sky decks in the city. He is kneeling with a ring box while she looks down at him smiling. Behind them the skyline stretches across Manhattan with panoramic views of skyscrapers, the Hudson River, and the southern tip of the city. The bright daylight and sweeping cityscape create a dramatic backdrop for this unforgettable proposal moment.

Vessel

The Vessel at Hudson Yards is more like an art sculpture that looks like it is straight out of modern art. During Christmas, it is covered with lights that are golden from top to bottom, making it radiate a surreal ambiance that shines on its copper walls. Walking into The Vessel is like navigating a light maze, and each level gives you a distinct view of your surroundings.

One tip about proposing is to propose on the second or third tier, rather than on level one. This is because you will experience more privacy while being surrounded by the gold geometric design of the structure. The stairs’ symmetry provides an incredible background design to wide-angle proposal shots, particularly during those minutes after sunset when lights start to radiate brightly. We recommend to add a minimalistic decor with candles and “Marry Me” letters.

Behind them the holiday lights and small decorated trees create a warm festive glow. The illuminated structure of the Vessel rises in the background, making this a romantic and iconic New York proposal setting.
